Introduction

The Information Institute conducts research that focuses on the information user, and the interaction of the user with information products, services, policies, technologies, and organizations. Of special interest is the planning and evaluation of networked and other information services.

The Institute also conducts information policy research on current issues at Federal and state levels related to public access, privacy, records management, and use of information in electronic forms as well as other topics.

History

The Institute was founded in summer of 1999. Dr. Charles R. McClure has been the Director of the Institute since it began operations. The Institute is a part of the College of Information at Florida State University. The University celebrated its 150th Anniversary in 2001.

Mission

The mission of the Institute is to develop and implement applied research and policy studies that improve the quality, effectiveness, and productivity of individuals and organizations' use and management of information resources and services. The Institute is especially interested in the social and behavioral aspects regarding access to, the use of, and management of information and information technology.

Successful development and implementation of applied research and policy requires taking action. That is, the Institute stresses the development of specific strategies for implementing study findings, making practical recommendations, and facilitating change. A key component of Institute work is insuring that study findings and results can be implemented in practical and successful ways. Work done by the Institute is intended to make a difference in how individuals and organizations access, use, and manage information.
